Hammond is able to force the scientists to use their heightened intellect to create amazing new inventions, which Hammond sells for his own profit.
Hammond rapidly becomes a rich celebrity due to the wealth he has acquired. Jordan confronts Hammond personally in a battle of power rings that ends only when the charge of Hammond's ring runs out, allowing Jordan to capture him and restore Kalmaku and the scientists.
Hammond returns in Justice League of America #14, where he has managed to escape from prison and deliberately exposes himself to the meteorite. The radiation causes his brain to grow to enormous size, granting him psionic powers as well as immortality in the process. Unfortunately, his body becomes immobilized and he loses the power to speak. Trapped in a motionless state, Hammond is still able to use his psionic powers to control the minds of others. Over the years, his sector became known as the most orderly slice of the universe, bringing great renown to Sinestro. After Hal Jordan was accepted into the Corps, Sinestro was asked to help train him, and they became fast friends. But when Hal discovered that Sinestro's peace-keeping methods bordered on fascism, Jordan exposed him to the Guardians, and he was thrown out of the Corps and exiled to the Anti-Matter Universe.
The reverse-guardians of the Anti-Matter Universe, the Weaponers of Qward, gave Sinestro a yellow ring with which to terrorize the Green Lantern Corps, thus avenging himself upon them. However, he was thwarted again and again by Jordan and eventually imprisoned within the Central Power Battery on Oa. There, he discovered another prisoner of the great lanterns: a creature called Parallax, who had been there for millennia. Parallax was a being of pure fear that was responsible for the yellow impurity in green rings. Sinestro awoke this creature and helped it possess his nemesis Hal Jordan, faked his own death, and, in doing so, turned Jordan into the renegade he himself once was.

Abin Sur crashed on Earth, and his ring sought out Hal Jordan as the best replacement.
Seriously wounded, Abin Sur directed his craft away from Coast City and crashed in the desert. Abin Sur knew he was dying and instructed his ring to find a suitable replacement. The ring found Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner and selected Jordan, the closer candidate.

The Guardians of the Universe recruited Kilowog, a gifted genetic scientist, from the planet Bolovax Vik, located in Space Sector 674. Kilowog was trained by Lantern Ermey, who would often use the word "Poozer", which meant "useless rookies" (A word Kilowog would later adopt, albeit in a friendlier way). In the middle of a particularly arduous training regiment, Ermey had Kilowog and his fellow rookies help stop an attack on a group of Lanterns, one of whom was the future renegade Sinestro. Ermey, fatally wounded in battle, commended Kilowog on his abilities, telling him that he had the makings of a great leader.
In addition to serving with distinction as the Green Lantern of that sector, Kilowog also began to spend extensive periods of time on the Green Lantern Corps' home planet of Oa instructing new recruits on how to handle and best utilize their power rings. In this capacity, Kilowog acted as the first trainer to a young Hal Jordan, the ring-recruited successor to the slain Abin Sur of Ungara, the Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814. Kilowog and his new recruit helped the Guardians confront Abin Sur's murderer, the hive mind interstellar malefactor known as Legion - this would later be retconned as Atrocitus was the reason that Abin Sur died.

He was also the first Lantern to meet Sur's replacement, Hal Jordan, and the two got along equally well. In the Post-Crisis timeline, that friendship is deepened further in that the rookie Jordan met him soon after being recruited. Jordan was brought to him by his power ring to help with his difficulties with handling the weapon and Tomar-Re not only guided the Terran to GLC headquarters for the optional training program, but also provided valuable emotional support during this difficult time.
Tomar's most famous mission while serving in the Corps dealt with the planet Krypton. Krypton, a planet in sector 2813, was growing increasingly unstable. It was due to explode, caused by internal pressures deep inside the planet's core. Tomar-Re sought to use a rare compound called stellarium to absorb some of the tectonic pressure, thus saving the Kryptonians. He gathered the compound, and was en route to Krypton when a yellow solar flare blinded him, and forced him to drop the stellarium. He quickly recovered, but discovered he was blind. He gathered what little stellarium he could without his sight, and proceeded towards Krypton. He was closing in when his vision started to clear. The first thing he saw upon his sight returning was Krypton exploding. The Guardians recovered Tomar and brought him back to Oa, where he healed and rested.

Guardians of the Universe
Played By Unknown
Comic Origin:
The Guardians evolved on the planet Maltus, and were among the first intelligent life forms in the universe. At this time they were tall greyish blue humanoids with black hair, who roughly resembled humans except for their skin color. They became scientists and thinkers, experimenting on the worlds around them. One experiment led to the creation of a new species, the Psions. In a pivotal moment, billions of years ago, a Maltusian named Krona used time-bending technology to observe the beginning of the Universe. However, this experiment, and later attempts to stop it, unleashed disaster upon all existence. Originally, the experiment splintered the Universe into the Multiverse and created the evil Anti-Matter Universe of Qward. Following the retroactive destruction of the Multiverse, it was revealed that Krona flooded the beginning of the Universe with entropy causing it "to be born old".
Feeling responsible for this, the evolved Maltusians relocated to the planet Oa (at "the center of the Universe") and became the Guardians. Their goal was simple: combat evil and create an orderly universe. And they acted quickly on that goal. During this period they slowly evolved into their current appearance, losing about half of their height and having their skulls grow larger. They now act as the leaders of the Green Lantern Corps, an interstellar police force which patrols the universe.

They later married, but have since separated.
Thomas was one of the few people who knew Hal Jordan's secret, and kept a journal of Green Lantern's adventures, which he later published as a biography of Hal Jordan. In several stories he either assisted the hero, or required rescuing. As a non-costumed sidekick, he served a similar role to Jimmy Olsen, except that Jimmy did not know Superman's identity.
It is later revealed that he is about to become an equal partner in Carol Ferris's aircraft company. It is also mentioned that the Guardians of the Universe once offered Tom a Power Ring, but that he turned it down, with a simple "naw." It had originally been revealed in Legacy that Tom was Hal's choice to be his replacement.
Tom briefly featured in the "Secret Origin" storyline, which reworked some of the earlier parts of the Green Lantern mythos. In this new origin, Tom greatly disliked being called "Pieface" by an arrogant pilot, and was defended by Hal, who had just joined Ferris Aircraft.
